Pagan Brews
Contemporary beer with a taste of heritage
Introduction
What is beer? – from Natufian beermaking in Raqefet Cave 13,000 years ago to this day, the answer would be quite different at every point in history and geography. Ironically enough, it is exactly the last 200 years in beer history that are the most boring in terms of both ingredients and technology, and consequently also diversity of flavours. How many different ways of mixing grain with water and hops can you come up with after all?
Our approach is based on timeless cornerstones of brewing – ingredients as local as possible, brewers’ lore, and an open mind. And beer that we ourselves enjoy drinking.
Look at nature – hops is just one of many medicinal plants.
We’re fortunate to have grown up in Latvia, where every five-year-old has already taken their first steps in herbal medicine, and every adult has a selection of self-picked herbal teas in the kitchen. Our forests and meadows are unspoilt and abundant enough for this to be a real, lived experience. Hops is just one of over 20 medicinal herbs that we brew our beers with.
Retreat to Latvian nature with our beers!
Beer, braggot, mead, honey sparkle – honey runs in our veins.
In the Baltic Sea region, honey has always been an important brewing ingredient – before the 17th century barely any beer got made without it. In this sense, we remain faithful to the traditions of our ancestors, as well as to our beekeepers and their bees, as we use honey in many of our beers. Try our meads found in historical sources and given a modern treatment, as well as brews that we simply enjoy sipping ourselves.
And sober up with a honey sparkle!
Small-batch brews with wild yeasts, berries, fruits and yes – vegetables and mushrooms.
Since 2019, we are the only brewery in the Baltics with our own wild-yeast catching vessel – a coolship. With our limited-edition beers, we combine the terroir concept straight out of winemaking with Belgian lambic-style brewing techniques and the gifts of Latvian nature. Aged for years in wooden barrels, these beers will strike a chord with lovers of natural wine and the most discerning beer connoisseurs alike.
Unhurried and with plenty of character!
